Rate structures

Six ways commercial electricity gets priced.

The right structure depends on your peak demand, load profile, risk tolerance, and how predictable your operating budget needs to be. Most Texas commercial accounts fit one of these six.

Fully bundled

Single per-kWh rate that includes energy + capacity + transmission. Easiest to compare. Best fit for small commercial under ~10 kW peak demand.

Demand-metered

Separate energy + demand charges. Demand = highest 15-min peak each cycle. Standard for accounts above 10 kW. Pays to flatten your load profile.

Time-of-use

Different per-kWh rate for on-peak vs. off-peak hours. Wins for accounts that can shift load (warehousing, cold storage, industrial). Penalizes 9-5 office use.

Block-and-index

Buy a block of fixed-priced energy plus a floating market index for the rest. Mid-market sweet spot — partial price stability without overpaying for full hedge.

Indexed / pass-through

Wholesale market index plus a margin. Most exposure, lowest typical cost in stable markets. For sophisticated buyers with risk tolerance and load flexibility.

Renewable / REC-backed

Standard commercial rate paired with Renewable Energy Certificates. Use this if you have an ESG mandate or sustainability reporting requirement. Premium is ~$0.001-0.003/kWh over standard.

FAQ

Common questions on Texas commercial power.

Can I shop my business electricity provider in Texas?
Yes — if your facility is in deregulated TDU territory (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP, TNMP). Cities served by municipal utilities (Austin Energy, CPS Energy, El Paso Electric) cannot shop. Most of Texas commercial load is deregulated.
When should I lock a fixed-rate commercial contract?
Spring (April-May) and fall (October-November) historically have the lowest wholesale prices. Avoid signing during summer peak (July-August) when ERCOT scarcity pricing inflates forward curves. The 60-90 day window before your current contract ends is the only time you have full negotiating leverage.
What size account justifies a brokered RFP?
Once you cross ~$10K/month (roughly 100,000 kWh/mo with $0.10/kWh) it usually pays to run a structured RFP across 3-5 REPs. Below that, marketplace shopping or direct negotiation with 1-2 providers covers most of the savings.
How are demand charges calculated?
Your highest 15-minute average kW pull during the billing cycle becomes your "billed demand" — multiplied by a $/kW rate (typically $5-$15/kW). One bad afternoon spike can drive 30% of your monthly bill. Demand response programs and load shifting can reduce this significantly.

Need help shaping a commercial RFP?

Most mid-market and large commercial accounts benefit from a 30-minute discovery call before shopping. We don't sell electricity directly — we help you understand the contract structure, audit your current bills, and shortlist 2-3 REPs worth quoting.
