The real math of a Texas August bill

A typical 2,000 sq ft Texas home uses 2,000-3,000 kWh in August. At 12¢/kWh all-in that's $240-$360 for one month. AC accounts for 60-70% of it. Lighting, electronics, water heater, and fridge split the rest.

The implication: savings advice that isn't about AC is advice about the 30-40% tail. Relevant, but don't start there.

The big AC levers, ranked

1. Thermostat setpoint (biggest lever)

Each degree of cooling is roughly 3% of AC usage in Texas humidity. Go from 72°F to 78°F and you're saving 18%. The DOE recommends 78°F when home, 85°F when away. Most people can't do 78 in Texas August without being uncomfortable — 74-75 is a realistic compromise that still cuts 9-12%.

2. AC efficiency (SEER rating)

If your AC unit is 15+ years old, it's probably SEER 10-12. Modern units are SEER 16-20. A SEER 10 to SEER 18 upgrade cuts AC usage in half. Capital cost is $6-10K for a 3-ton system, but a Texas home can see $50-100/month savings in summer — 5-7 year payback. Look for the federal tax credit (up to $2,000) plus Texas utility rebates.

3. Air sealing and attic insulation

Leaky ducts and attic can add 20-30% to cooling load. Duct sealing alone often pays back in one summer. Blown-in attic insulation (R-30 to R-49) is the highest-ROI retrofit for Texas homes after air sealing.

4. Smart thermostat scheduling

Not the thermostat itself — the scheduling. Raising setpoint 4-5 degrees during work/sleep hours saves 5-10%. Smart thermostats automate this without effort. Note: geofencing and "away mode" only help if you're away. If someone's home all day, no benefit.

5. Window treatment

Sun-facing windows in summer add real heat load. Blackout curtains, reflective film, or exterior shades cut cooling demand 5-15% on those rooms. Cellular shades are the mainstream middle ground.

The smaller levers

  • Ceiling fans: fans cool people, not rooms. Running a fan in an empty room wastes electricity. Use them to make 78°F feel like 75°F — with the AC set higher.
  • Pool pumps: often the second-biggest summer load after AC. Run during off-peak hours (before 3 PM or after 7 PM). Variable-speed pumps cut energy use by 50%+.
  • Water heater: electric water heaters can be set to 120°F (from the 140°F default) safely. Saves 4-10%.
  • Dryer schedule: run early morning or after 8 PM. Doesn't save energy, but avoids heating the house during peak demand.

The plan-side lever you're probably ignoring

Shopping your plan is usually bigger than any efficiency upgrade you can make in a month. A 14¢/kWh plan vs. an 11¢/kWh plan at 2,500 kWh = $75 difference, every summer month. No thermostat change, no capital investment, no behavior shift.

If you haven't re-shopped in the last 12 months, your previous fixed-rate contract has probably expired and you're on an inflated month-to-month rate. That alone can cost you $50-$100/month.
