Apartments · 1BR
1-bedroom apartments typically use 450-650 kWh/mo. The trap: most "cheap" plans hit their marketing rate at exactly 1,000 kWh, leaving 1-bedroom units paying 30-50% above the advertised rate. Best 1-bedroom plans price flat with no minimum-usage fee.

1BR renter tips
Avoid minimum-usage fees
At 450-650 kWh/mo, you're well below the 1,000 kWh trigger most plans set. Skip any plan with a "minimum-usage fee" line in the EFL — it adds $5-10 to bills under that threshold.
Pick short terms — leases turn over
A 24- or 36-month plan with a $720 cancellation fee is a problem if you move at lease-end. Stick to 6-12 month plans, or month-to-month if you don't know your next address.
Same-day connection for new leases
Most REPs can activate service in 1-3 business days. If you need same-day for a fast move, several Texas REPs (TXU, Reliant, 4Change) have a "switch-on-demand" option for a fee.
