TXU Energy Overview

TXU Energy is one of the most recognized names in Texas electricity. As a subsidiary of Vistra Corp, they serve millions of customers across all major TDU territories. They’ve been around since the start of deregulation and remain one of the largest retail electric providers (REPs) in the state.

Plan Options

TXU offers plans across most categories:

  • Fixed-rate plans — Lock in a rate for 12, 24, or 36 months. Straightforward, predictable bills.
  • Free Nights plans — Electricity is free between certain hours (usually 9 PM to 6 AM). The trade-off: daytime rates are higher. Whether this saves you money depends entirely on when your home uses the most electricity.
  • Solar buyback plans — If you have solar panels, TXU will credit you for excess energy you send back to the grid.
  • Variable-rate plans — Month-to-month with no contract. Rates change monthly based on market conditions.

What to Watch For

TXU’s brand recognition comes with a premium. Their rates are consistently higher than smaller, leaner competitors offering the same electricity through the same wires. You’re paying for the name and the marketing budget behind it.

Their Free Nights plans are popular but often misunderstood. If your home uses most of its electricity during the day (AC running while you’re at work, for example), the higher daytime rate can more than offset the free nighttime hours. Always calculate the total monthly cost at your actual pattern of use — not just the headline rate.

Service Territory

TXU Energy serves customers in all major deregulated areas of Texas, including Oncor (Dallas-Fort Worth), CenterPoint (Houston), AEP Texas (Corpus Christi, South Texas), and TNMP (various areas).
