The company is PUCT-licensed and operates under the same regulatory framework as every other retail electricity provider in the state. Being backed by Discount Power gives Pennywise operational experience and infrastructure without the need to build everything from scratch.
Plan Options
Pennywise Power offers a focused set of options:
- Fixed-rate plans — Locked-in pricing for set terms, typically 6 to 24 months. These plans often rank among the more affordable options in the markets they serve.
- Variable-rate plans — Month-to-month pricing with no contract. Your rate changes each billing cycle based on market conditions.
- Prepaid plans — Pay-as-you-go electricity that requires no credit check and no deposit. You add money to your account and draw against that balance. This is a good fit for customers who want to manage spending tightly or who may have credit challenges.
What to Watch For
Pennywise Power’s main limitation is coverage. Unlike many providers that serve all four major TDU territories in Texas, Pennywise is available only in Oncor and CenterPoint areas. If you live in AEP Texas or TNMP territory, Pennywise won’t be an option.
When comparing their rates, check the Electricity Facts Label at the kWh level that matches how much your home typically draws. Budget providers like Pennywise sometimes structure their pricing with lower per-kWh rates but different base charge arrangements, so the all-in cost at your actual level of consumption is what matters.
