Green Mountain Energy Overview
Green Mountain Energy was founded in 1997 — before Texas even deregulated — with the mission of changing the way power is made. They were the first company in Texas to sell 100% renewable electricity to residential customers. Now owned by NRG Energy, they remain the most recognized green energy brand in the state.
Plan Options
- Fixed-rate renewable plans — Lock in a rate, 100% of your electricity is matched with renewable energy certificates (RECs) from wind and solar sources.
- Variable-rate plans — Month-to-month green energy.
- Solar buyback — If you have rooftop solar, Green Mountain will buy your excess generation at competitive rates.
What to Watch For
Every Green Mountain plan is 100% renewable, which means you’re paying a premium compared to conventional electricity. The gap has narrowed significantly — wind and solar are now cheap to produce — but Green Mountain’s rates are still typically 10-20% above the cheapest conventional plans.
It’s also worth noting that “100% renewable” means they purchase RECs equal to your consumption. The actual electrons coming through your wires are the same grid mix as everyone else. The environmental benefit is real (it funds renewable generation) but it’s not the same as being directly connected to a wind farm.
NRG Energy’s ownership is a tension point for some customers. NRG operates coal and gas plants through other subsidiaries. Green Mountain operates independently, but the profits flow to a fossil fuel parent.
