When Flat-Rate Plans Save You Money

Flat-rate plans work best for households with consistently high electricity consumption — large homes, homes with multiple AC systems, or homes in the hottest parts of Texas where summer bills are extreme. If your consumption regularly pushes near or above the plan’s assumed level, the fixed monthly cost can be a good deal.

Flat-rate plans work poorly for smaller homes, apartments, or households with moderate consumption. If you typically use less than what the plan is priced for, you are paying more than you need to. A standard fixed-rate plan at your actual consumption level would cost less.
